Landsvirkjun and Alcoa have commissioned Gallup to conduct a satisfaction survey among the companies' employees in recent years, and the results can be seen below. The rating scale is from 1 to 5. Alcoa Fjarðaál did not perform a survey in 2009, and none for Landsvirkjun in 2010 and 2012. Landsvirkjun no longer uses Gallup surveys to measure job satisfaction, but the last job satisfaction survey conducted by Gallup for Landsvirkjun was in 2021.

The average score of companies involved:

Capacent Gallup calculates the average score of all companies participating in their surveys within a 5-year period. The average is updated once or twice a year, and usually, the changes are minimal (0.01 to 0.03). 

Gallup's Comparison scales:
Strong scale: The statement scores 4.2 or above on a scale of 1-5.
Acceptable scale: The statement scores 3.7-4.9 or above on a scale of 1-5.
Action scale: The statement scores 3.69 or less on a scale of 1-5.

What is measured?

Annual survey among Alcoa Fjarðaál and Landsvirkjun employees on workplace and job satisfaction (Project effect: direct).

Monitoring protocol

Capacent conducts surveys within companies. Data is collected annually.

Targets
  • Fljótsdalsstöð power station: 4.2 or higher on Gallup scale.
  • Alcoa Fjarðaál: 4.2 or higher on Gallup scale.
Possible countermeasures

The companies have issued human resources policies.

This indicator was originally number 3.1. It was then named Alcoa and Landsvirkjun Employee Job Satisfaction and can be found under that number in documents of the project from 2005 and 2006.

The indicator number has been changed twice.

Rationale for Indicator Selection

Alcoa Fjarðaál and Landsvirkjun can have a direct effect on their employees' welfare. A workforce that is content with its workplace and experiences high job satisfaction will have a higher retention rate than a discontented group of employees. Employee retention affects economic stability at the impact area of Kárahnjúkavirkjun and Alcoa Fjarðaál smelter. By conducting regular employee satisfactoin survey Alcoa Fjarðaál and Landsvirkjun are better able to monitor employee attitudes and, where necessary, implement changes.
